Inaugurated in 1994, the John Templeton European Religion Writer of the Year Award is conferred to a journalist for excellence, enterprise and versatility in reporting on religion in the European secular press. An international field of judges with wide media experience makes the award.

The prize carries with it an award of 5,000 Swiss Francs and a citation. The winner will be asked to give a lecture on Religious Information in Today's Society at a cultural center or university. The Conference of European Churches will organize the lecture with the support of the John Templeton Foundation.

Conference of European Churches (CEC) administers this award on behalf of the John Templeton Foundation.
